"worth while Sushi in North Beach, Pristine fish, impressive sake"

By Robin Davis, Chronicle staff critique.

"...Sushi on North Beach has proved that the once Primarily Italian neighborhood is becoming more and more diverse."

"...an irregularly shaped space houses the 42-seat restaurant, which has been simply but charmingly decorated with coral flaked wallpaper, colorful kites stretching across the ceiling and sake bottles lining the windows."

"...Chef-owner Katsu has earned a reputation as much for his sake list as for his food."

"...It's the only use of foie gras in Sushi that I've seen that works..."

"...The rest of the city and the Bay Area maybe bursting with Sushi joints, but North Beach has been different."

"Owner/Chef Katsu not only knows his fish but is also a connoisseur of fine Sake, stocking over 15 regional rice wines from all over Japan and even from California. Katsu's Menu includes combinations plates, Teriyaki, and curry, but Sushi is the star here. Yellowtail, sea eel, and fresh scallops are all winners, as well as the maki or sushi rolls. For a special treat, order the wacky North Beach roll: smoked salmon wrapped around a tiger prawn, kani-kama, and avocado, topped with a secret sauce. Sea urchin is like a scotch-an acquired taste, and for some an addiction. Katsu doesn't offer it unless it is sweet and fresh, with no off flavors."
