Sushi Etiquette

As we have been in the Japanese Sushi business for over three decades, we've noticed that our customers eat in different ways, which we of course encourage as long as they enjoy eating. But we decided through our website to make sure that we mention the correct way to eat and get the most out of the sushi eating experience.

The preparation of sushi and the preparation of sauces accompanying sushi is based on the age-old custom requiring harmony and delicacy. The five basic flavors, bitter, sour, sweet, spicy hot and salt, are to be found in perfect harmony with sushi. no flavor is supposed to overwhelm, and all flavors present should complement one another. In eating sushi, the most important rule is to have fun and enjoy what you are eating. Knowing how to eat sushi the traditional way will certainly make you enjoy it even better.

Condiments:

Soy Sauce: Don't ever soak your sushi in soy sauce. If you do, the soy sauce will completely dominate the flavor of the fish. The best way to appreciate the freshness of the sushi is to gently dip a corner of the sushi into the soy sauce just before popping it to your mouth. Some type of sushi are already flavored and require no additional soy sauce.

Ginger: This is used as a palate cleanser between various types of sushi.

Wasabi: It is meant to complement the sushi, not to suppress it. If you don't like wasabi at all, remember to tell the sushi chef, as certain types of sushi are often made with wasabi on the inside.

Dipping Nigiri Sushi:

Nigiri sushi, unlike sashimi, maybe eaten with the fingers. Take a bit of wasabi, and put it on top of the piece of sushi. Then pick up the sushi, dip the topping (often fish) into the sauce and place the sushi in your mouth with the fish touching you tongue.

Using shapsticks is a little harder, even for those with lots of experience. First turn the sushi on its side. Do this carefully so that the sushi doesn't fall apart. Pick up the sushi with one chopstick on the fish part and one on the rice.

Of course as we already said, you are always welcome to eat and enjoy the way you prefer.
